The Australian columnist Tom Switzer argues the labels of ‘left-right’ are outdated as they foster “simplistic divides”.

“If you look at France, Marine Le Pen, who’s all too often denounced as a far-right extremist … she and her party are tapping into legitimate anxieties in socialist strongholds in northern France,” Mr Switzer told News24 host Chris Kenny.

“These are areas that have been de-industrialised. A lot of miners, manufacturers, they’re not voting for the socialist party or the far-left party; they’re embracing Le Pen. Sound familiar?

“What this shows is that the old ideological labels of left and right foster simplistic divisions. They create artificial alliances.

“We are living in very volatile times, and it staggers belief that so many seasoned observers of Australian politics are absolutely convinced that One Nation’s rise is only going to hurt the Coalition. It’s clearly going to hurt both sides of the major parties.”
