[Diplomat's Archives: Hidden Stories] Ep.59 Antarctica: Korea and Chile Join Forces

In 1988, Korea established the King Sejong Station, the country’s first Antarctic research station. Since then, Chile has been one of Korea’s most important partners in Antarctic research. The Korea Polar Research Institute and the Chilean Antarctic Institute have maintained research cooperation since 2012. In 2016, the Chile-Korea Antarctic Cooperation Center was also established in Punta Arenas, Chile, a gateway to Antarctica, to support exchanges and cooperation between researchers from the two countries.
We explore the partnership between Korea and Chile on Antarctica, a land that holds clues to the past and future of our planet.


1988년 한국 최초의 남극 연구기지인 세종과학기지가 세워졌다. 이때부터 본격적인 남극 연구에 뛰어든 한국에게 가장 중요한 파트너 중 하나가 바로 칠레다. 한국 극지연구소와 칠레 남극연구소는 2012년부터 연구 협력 관계를 이어 왔고, 2016년에는 남극 진입의 관문인 칠레 푼타아레나스에 한·칠레 남극협력센터도 개소해 양국 연구진의 교류와 협력을 지원하고 있다.
지구의 과거와 미래를 읽을 수 있는 땅, 남극을 무대로 펼쳐지는 한국과 칠레의 연대를 확인해 본다.
