China now produces around 90% of the world's humanoid robots and is investing heavily in what it calls "embodied AI". But despite remarkable advances in hardware, many experts believe the biggest obstacle isn't engineering at all. It's intelligence.
So why can AI write software but not unload a dishwasher? Why is picking up a cup still harder for a robot than solving complex problems? And how close are we really to robots that can operate autonomously in the real world?
