On the morning of September 11, 2001, amateur video footage and news cameras captured some of the most harrowing images in American history โ figures visible at the upper windows of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, waving cloth and dangling from the building's exterior above the 100th floor. These individuals had survived the initial impact of American Airlines Flight 11 but found themselves trapped above the point of impact, cut off from any means of descent by smoke, fire, and structural devastation that consumed the stairwells below them. With temperatures inside the tower reaching catastrophic levels and air becoming unbreathable, those caught in the footage faced circumstances of almost incomprehensible desperation, their gestures toward the outside world representing final attempts at communication or rescue. Emergency responders on the ground and in helicopters were unable to reach them, as the scale and ferocity of the disaster overwhelmed every available option. When the North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m., none of those seen in the upper floors survived, their fate becoming one of the defining and most sorrowful testaments to the human cost of the single deadliest terrorist attack ever carried out on American soil.
