In this conversation, they explore the history of hate speech laws in the United States and how government efforts to suppress speech rarely work, as shown by the Trump Administration’s recent attempts to censor Jimmy Kimmel’s interview with Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate James Talarico. After Kimmel said his network was threatened with retribution by the Federal Communications Commission if it aired the segment, the interview was pulled from the broadcast and released on YouTube, where it has had over 9 million views and counting.
