새로운 세상이 시작된 날

지난 10월 3일은 단군의 고조선 건국을 기념하는 5대 국경일 중 하나인 개천절이었어요.

개천절(開天節)은 '하늘이 열린 날'이라는 뜻이에요. 하늘의 문이 열렸다는 뜻이 아니라, 환인의 아들 환웅이 하늘에서 내려와 널리 인간을 이롭게 하는 홍익인간의 뜻으로 세상을 열었고, 그 뜻을 이어 단군왕검이 기원전 2333년에 우리 민족 최초의 나라 고조선을 세웠다고 전해지는 것을 기리는 국경일이에요. 우리 민족의 역사와 문화가 하늘의 뜻을 이어 비로소 시작된 날이라는 의미를 담고 있어요.

10월 3일 개천절 아침, 안개 낀 시골 마을에 하루가 밝아요. 두 남매는 함께 대문 앞에 태극기를 게양하고 하루를 시작해요.

따끈한 두부김치찌개로 아침을 든든하게 먹고, 마을 뒷산으로 운동 겸 가벼운 산책을 나서요. 소소하지만 마음이 편안해지는 힐링의 하루예요.

감나무 아래를 지나 코스모스가 핀 길과 황금빛 들판을 걸어요. 바람 부는 언덕에 올라 커다란 느티나무 아래에서 숨을 고르고, 해 질 무렵 하늘이 분홍빛으로 물드는 모습을 가만히 바라보며 감사하는 마음을 되새겨요.

집집마다 태극기가 걸리고 불빛이 하나둘 켜지는 저녁 골목을 지나 집으로 돌아온 두 남매는, 깊은 밤 툇마루에 앉아 따뜻한 보리차와 쫀득한 인절미를 나눠 먹어요. 별이 가득한 하늘 아래에서 이 하루도 조용히 저물어 가요.

Last October 3rd was Gaecheonjeol (National Foundation Day), one of the five national holidays, commemorating Dangun's founding of Gojoseon.

Gaecheonjeol (開天節) means "the day the heavens opened." It does not mean that the gates of heaven literally opened. According to tradition, Hwanung, the son of Hwanin, descended from heaven and opened the world in the spirit of Hongik Ingan, to benefit all humanity. Continuing that spirit, Dangun Wanggeom is said to have founded Gojoseon, the first nation of the Korean people, in 2333 BC, and the holiday commemorates this. It carries the meaning that the history and culture of the Korean people began by inheriting the will of heaven.

On the morning of Gaecheonjeol, October 3rd, a new day dawns over a misty countryside village. The two siblings raise the Taegukgi together at the front gate and begin their day.

They have a hearty breakfast of hot tofu kimchi stew, then set out on a light walk up the hill behind the village, as a little exercise. It is a simple but comforting, healing day.

They pass beneath the persimmon tree, then walk along a road lined with cosmos and through golden fields. They climb a windy hill, catch their breath under a great zelkova tree, and quietly watch the sky turn pink at sunset, reflecting on a grateful heart.

Passing through the evening alley, where Taegukgi hang at every house and lights come on one by one, the two siblings return home. Late at night, they sit on the toenmaru porch and share warm barley tea and chewy injeolmi. Beneath a sky full of stars, this day quietly draws to a close.
