What happens when we give AI the power to make decisions, but forget to ask whether it should be making them in the first place?

As artificial intelligence moves beyond answering questions and begins recommending, approving and acting on our behalf, the conversation around AI needs to move beyond how intelligent it is. Hemang Upadhyay explores a more important question: has AI earned the right to act?

Drawing from over 16 years of experience in technology, digital products and AI, Hemang examines what happens when automated systems operate with incomplete information, unclear boundaries or no clear path to challenge their decisions. He argues that automating a bad decision does not fix it. It simply allows the decision to travel faster.

The talk presents five principles for building AI that deserves trust: evidence, authority, visibility, restraint and recovery. Together, they offer a practical way to think about responsible AI without treating innovation and human judgment as opposing forces.

As AI becomes part of everyday decisions involving money, work, education, health and opportunity, the next generation will need to understand not only how to build powerful technology, but also how to decide where that technology should stop.

AI can generate options. Humans must decide which options are worth choosing.

The future is not about humans versus machines. It is about building technology powerful enough to help us and responsible enough to know when human judgment must remain in control. Hemang Upadhyay is a strategic Product and AI leader with over 16 years of experience transforming complex ideas into scalable products, digital platforms, and meaningful customer experiences. His work spans enterprise AI, digital commerce, customer experience, product data, and business transformation.

An industry speaker, published author, advisor, mentor, and judge for global technology and innovation programs, Hemang helps organizations move beyond AI experimentation toward responsible and measurable implementation. He is passionate about helping people overcome the fear of change, develop an adaptive leadership mindset, and recognize technology as a tool to expand human potential rather than replace it. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
