Putin's Kuril Move: Warning to Japan? | DW News

Russia has carried out missile drills near the disputed Kuril Islands, triggering a sharp protest from Japan. The exercises came just days after President Vladimir Putin’s high-profile visit to the territory claimed by both countries. Tokyo says Russia’s growing military presence in the islands is unacceptable and undermines Japan’s territorial claims. Meanwhile, relations between the two neighbors have deteriorated significantly since the war in Ukraine began. And what are the broader implications for stability in the Indo-Pacific? DW’s Sarah Kelly speaks to political analyst James D. J. Brown.
