On Wednesday, a fleet of four representative vessel types successfully completed the first night navigation test in the urban section of the Pinglu Canal.
The success lays a critical foundation for the official opening in September this year, ensuring all‑weather operation for sea‑river intermodal transport.
Among all test items, night navigation in the urban section is widely considered the most difficult and risky.
Challenges include dense bridge lighting, curved banks, and tidal backwater that alters nighttime flow.
To mitigate the high risks, the Guangxi maritime authorities adopted the principle of "prevention before, strict control during, and emergency backup."
All participating vessels underwent pre‑voyage inspections to ensure they were seaworthy.
They were equipped with BeiDou positioning and drone‑mounted flow monitoring devices to collect real‑time data on tracks and safe distances between vessels.
A joint coordination mechanism involving maritime, navigation support, and port authorities was established to ensure navigation safety by space and time segments.
The successful completion of the first night test marks a key validation of the nighttime passage capability for the "last kilometer" of the New International Land‑Sea Trade Corridor, laying a solid foundation for a round‑the‑clock, reliable sea route for southwest China.
