अक्टूबर फेस्ट जर्मनी का वह मशहूर फेस्ट है जहां आने वाले लोग हर साल 70 लाख लीटर से भी ज्यादा बीयर पी जाते हैं. लेकिन 200 साल से भी ज्यादा पुराना यह आयोजन सिर्फ बीयर तक सीमित नहीं है. यहां संगीत है, बवेरिया की संस्कृति की झलक है और लाखों लोगों के साथ जश्न मनाने का मौका है. लेकिन इस मौज मस्ती भरे माहौल का अतीत इतना खुशनुमा नहीं था. इससे जुड़ा है नाजियों का इतिहास. इसमें एक राजा-रानी की कहानी भी है. यहां कभी एंटरटेनमेंट के नाम पर दुनियाभर से लाए गए “एग्जॉटिक” इंसानों से करतब कराए जाते थे. बेबाक ईशा के इस एपिसोड में जानिए अक्टूबरफेस्ट के इतिहास का वह हिस्सा जो आजतक आपने नहीं सुना.

It all started with a wedding. On October 12, 1810, Bavarian crown prince Ludwig I married Saxon princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. To pep up the ceremony, a horse race was proposed and a race track built. Today's Oktoberfest takes place on the grounds where the original horse race was held. At the end of the century, Oktoberfest still wasn't a beer fest - in fact, some songs that encouraged drinking were forbidden. Staunchly against alcohol, Hitler never appeared at Oktoberfest. He regarded the event with suspicion, just as he did Christmas. But by 1936, Nazi flags had replaced all other flags on the festival lawn, and Jewish vendors were forbidden from participating. The last Oktoberfest before the war was held in 1938 and dubbed the "Great German Folk Festival." By the 1960's, Oktoberfest was back on its feet and growing - just in time for Munich to play host to the Olympics in 1972. What began as a horse race and became world-famous as a celebration of all things Bavarian is now an international trademark.
