What Happens When an Ancient Kingdom Lies Beneath Your Home?

I've explored more than 190 neighborhoods in Seoul, but I've never come across a place quite as strangely fascinating as Pungnap-dong. Located in Songpa-gu, the neighborhood is surrounded by an earthen fortress wall dating back to the Baekje Kingdom. As much of a blessing as that may sound, the reality is far more complicated. Homes are bought out, demolished, and replaced with empty concrete lots, parking lots, or the occasional small park, all to make way for future archaeological excavations. One day, this entire area could become a vast historical park. Within the fortress walls, the interests of developers, cultural heritage preservationists, and local residents collide in fascinating ways. This is what happens when an ancient kingdom lies beneath your feet.

서울의 동네를 190곳 넘게 돌아봤지만, 풍납동처럼 묘하게 매력적인 곳은 처음이었습니다. 송파구에 위치한 풍납동은 백제 시대에 쌓은 토성으로 둘러싸여 있습니다. 얼핏 보면 큰 축복처럼 들리지만, 현실은 훨씬 복잡합니다. 앞으로 진행될 발굴조사를 위해 집들이 보상 매입된 뒤 철거되고, 그 자리는 빈 콘크리트 공터나 주차장, 때로는 작은 공원으로 바뀌고 있습니다. 언젠가는 이 일대 전체가 거대한 역사공원이 될지도 모릅니다. 성벽 안에서는 개발업자와 문화유산 보존을 주장하는 사람들, 그리고 지역 주민들의 이해관계가 흥미로운 방식으로 충돌합니다. 발밑에 고대 왕국이 잠들어 있을 때 벌어지는 일입니다.
