While it looks like a quirky habit, "hay dunking" is a fascinating equine behavior with real biological purpose. Horses naturally graze on fresh pasture containing up to 80% moisture. Processed barn hay contains only around 10%, making it dry and abrasive. By soaking stiff forage in water, horses soften tough plant fibers, wash away irritating dust, and lubricate stems to prevent dangerous choking or colic. It can also help ease chewing for horses with dental sensitivity. Nature always finds clever ways to adapt!
