The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is "very, very close" to taking power in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, its deputy parliamentary leader has told the BBC, after a historic victory in elections there.

It would be the first time a far-right party has governed a German state in the post-war era.

So how has the AfD – which insists it’s a conservative movement – won over voters? And why do critics compare the party to the Nazis?
