In 1801, the young United States went to war with Tripoli after Barbary states demanded tribute from American merchant ships and captured sailors.

The First Barbary War produced one of the most daring episodes in early U.S. military history: Lieutenant Stephen Decatur’s nighttime raid that destroyed the captured USS Philadelphia.

Then, in 1805, William Eaton, Marine Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon and a mixed force marched roughly 500 miles across the North African desert before storming Derna. Their victory helped force Tripoli into peace—and inspired the famous words of the Marines’ Hymn: “the shores of Tripoli.”
