What the Unabomber's anti-tech manifesto predicted in 1995 | 60 Minutes Australia

Theodore "Ted" Kaczynski's 18-year reign of terror was America's longest manhunt, which began in 1978 when he mailed the first of 16 sophisticated homemade bombs. Branded by the United States FBI as the "Unabomber", the Harvard-educated mathematician targeted universities and airlines. But his motive and identity were unknown, until in 1995 when he released a 35,000-word manifesto blaming technology for the demise of society.

The manifesto, published in full on the New York Times and The Washington Post as part of a negotiation with Kaczynski to stop killing people, included beliefs that the Industrial Revolution and technology have made life unfulfilling and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world.

Kaczynski was arrested in April 1996, and died by suicide in June 2023 at a federal medical facility after decades in prison.
