JESSIE VARGAS REFUSED TO LET THE CONTROVERSIAL ENDING GO.
After suffering a unanimous decision loss to Timothy Bradley Jr. in their June 27 welterweight title fight at StubHub Center in Carson, California, Vargas officially appealed the result to the California State Athletic Commission, ESPN reported.
Vargas is seeking to have the defeat changed to a **NO CONTEST** after referee Pat Russell mistakenly ended the fight with roughly seven seconds remaining in the 12th and final round, confusing the 10-second clapper with the final bell.
The timing was brutal for Vargas. Moments before the premature stoppage, he had Bradley badly hurt, rocking him with a huge right hand and coming dangerously close to dropping the champion. With Bradley seemingly on unsteady legs and only seconds remaining, Vargas believed he was robbed of his final opportunity to finish the fight.
Vargas made his frustration crystal clear after the bout and vowed to fight the decision.
“Normally it's 36 minutes for a fight, right? It was a little under that right when he was hurt, right when he was out on his feet, and all I needed was one last punch,” Vargas said.
According to Vargas, Russell stepped in, looked at Bradley and waved off the action before realizing his mistake.
