THE PITCH
The brands that win don’t put themselves at the centre of the story — they make their customers the hero and step into the role of the guide.
THE CORE IDEA
For decades, brands have been told to build a strong identity, a clear voice, a compelling story and then broadcast it to the world. This talk dismantles that model entirely. Drawing from Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey and Donald Miller’s StoryBrand framework, the talk argues that every great brand story has the customer as the protagonist and the brand as the mentor, the Yoda, the Gandalf. The moment a brand tries to be the hero, it loses the audience. The moment it empowers the customer to become the hero, it earns loyalty that no advertising budget can buy.
“People don’t want to follow your brand. They want your brand to follow them into who they’re becoming.”
WHY THIS MATTERS NOW
Social media has shifted power from brands to individuals; the customer now controls the narrative
Gen Z and Millennials actively reject brand-centric advertising in favour of brands that serve their identity
The most viral brand moments of the 2020s were customer stories, not brand campaigns
Nollywood — Africa's second-largest film industry — the productions that travel globally are not the ones celebrating studios or directors. They are the ones where ordinary Nigerians see themselves on screen as complex, powerful, worthy heroes. The audience is always the point. Dafe Richards is a marketing professional with 5 years of experience helping brands, from
startups to established enterprises through strategy-driven campaigns. He has worked with
some of Nigeria’s leading brands, delivering results across digital strategy, influencer
management, copywriting, content creation, social media, and marketing strategy.
As a content creator and social media influencer, Dafe has carved a niche by telling
compelling stories through videos that are relatable, funny, engaging, and impactful and is
building a vibrant community. He has partnered with brands to drive visibility and
engagement, and has also trained individuals on content creation helping them develop
the skills to tell their own stories with confidence.
He is the author of Unleash Your Greatness, a book for anyone ready to walk in purpose and
impact. His mission is simple: to help people find their light by shining his. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
