--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Janggi (Korean Chess) Basic Rules:

Objective:

Capture your opponent’s King (Gung).

Setup:

Two players: Blue and Red. Blue goes first.

Each player has 16 pieces placed on intersections:

King (Gung or Jang): moves one step along lines within the palace.

Advisor (Sa): moves one step diagonally or straight within the palace.

Elephant (Sang): moves exactly one step straight followed by two steps diagonally. Can't jump over occupied points.

Horse (Ma): moves exactly one step straight, then one step diagonally. Also blocked if adjacent points occupied.

Chariot (Cha): moves any number of spaces vertically or horizontally along lines.

Cannon (Po): moves like the Chariot but captures by jumping exactly one piece.

Soldier (Byeong/Jol): moves one step forward or sideways (no backward movement).

Capturing:

Pieces capture by occupying intersections held by opponent’s pieces.

Cannon must jump exactly one piece (friendly or enemy) to capture.

Ending the Game:

The first to capture the opponent’s King wins.

Game may end in draw by repeated moves or stalemate.
