산스크리트어 ‘슈냐타’는 형상이 사라지고 새로운 생성을 품는 태초의 비움, ‘공(空)’의상태를 뜻한다. 공중에 매달린 원통형 스크린은 칠흑 같은 어둠에서 시작한다. 검은지렁이 같은 형태들이 꿈틀거리며 나타나고, 여기에 인간 문명이 남긴 환경 오염 데이터가더해지면서 기괴하고도 화려한 오염 덩어리로 변이하고 증식해 화면 가득 세계를 이룬다. 관람객이 원통 안으로 들어가 숨을 불어넣으면 이 세계는 한순간에 꺼지고 공의 어둠으로돌아간다. 그 숨은 주위의 촉수 달린 구형체들로 옮겨 가 숨 쉬듯 수축을 되풀이하고, 촉수는 바닥의 로봇 팔로 이어져 로봇을 깨운다. AI는 작가의 드로잉을 유아의 본능적인낙서로 풀어내고, 로봇 팔은 그 선을 모래 위에 파낸다. 모래 위의 기호는 다시 스크린에 투사되어 새 생명체가 태어나는 씨앗이 된다. 사람과 기계를 잇는 것은 데이터도 명령어도 아닌 ‘숨’이다. ‘기술이 지능화될수록 인간은 어떤 존재로남는가.’ 작품은 그 답을 숨과 첫 선에서 찾는다.

The Sanskrit word sunyata, emptiness, names the place where form has vanished and the primordial void that holds new creation within it. The cylindrical screen suspended in the air begins in pitch darkness. Black, worm-like forms slowly begin to writhe into view, and as real data on the environmental pollution left by human civilisation is fed in, they mutate and multiply into grotesque yet gorgeous masses of contamination until they fill the screen with a world of their own. When a visitor steps into the cylinder and breathes into the sensor, that world is extinguished in an instant and the darkness of emptiness returns. The breath passes into the tentacled spheres hanging nearby, which contract again and again as if breathing, and their tentacles run down to a robotic arm on the floor, waking it. An AI unravels the artist’s drawings into the instinctive scribbles of an infant, and the arm scores those lines into a bed of sand. The marks in the sand are projected back onto the screen, where they become the seeds from which new life forms are born.
