Disabled Child Denied Medicaid Coverage

This is Trump’s America: disabled children losing the medical care they desperately need.

Ohio mother Madison Smith says her 19-month-old son, Colton, who became severely disabled after contracting bacterial meningitis, was denied Medicaid and is ineligible for a Medicaid waiver. She says she was told he ‘does not fit the criteria for disability and blindness.’

Her story comes after advocates warned that Medicaid cuts under Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill threaten care for children with disabilities. Ohio is projected to lose about $33B in federal Medicaid funding within the next 10 years under the law, according to Signal Ohio, and about 3M children are projected to lose Medicaid or CHIP coverage by 2036, according to First Focus Campaign for Children, citing Congressional Budget Office projections.
