When scratched along the withers or crest, horses experience an involuntary allogrooming response. In nature, mutual grooming stimulates the vagus nerve, lowering heart rates and releasing calming endorphins while strengthening herd bonds.

Because tactile stimulation at these specific nerve clusters triggers an automatic biological urge to reciprocate, the horse instinctively begins nibbling.
