What if the biggest weakness in our security is not a lack of technology, but the assumptions we make about what we can trust?

For decades, cybersecurity has often been built like a castle: create a strong wall, keep threats outside and trust what is already inside. But as our digital systems become more connected, that assumption is becoming increasingly risky.

In this talk, cybersecurity leader Vilas Shewale explores the idea of Zero Trust and why the principle of “never trust by default, always verify” is becoming essential for protecting the systems that keep modern life running.

Drawing from more than 25 years of experience protecting critical infrastructure, Vilas examines how seemingly simple assumptions can create vulnerabilities across energy systems, networks and organisations. He argues that cybersecurity cannot remain the responsibility of a small group of experts. Everyone who uses a system has a role to play in protecting it.

The talk offers a practical mindset for individuals and organisations: question the default, verify before you trust, and make protection everyone's responsibility.

As the next generation builds an increasingly connected world, cybersecurity will not simply be about stronger tools or bigger walls. It will be about developing a culture where people continuously question assumptions and take responsibility for what they help create and protect.

Trust no one by default. Protect everyone on purpose. Vilas Shewale is a Principal Specialist in Cybersecurity & Enterprise Infrastructure at Energy Transfer, where he oversees security architecture for critical infrastructure. With over 25 years of experience, he has led Zero Trust implementation across 20,000+ endpoints and multiple IT/OT environments, while developing frameworks for SCADA security, supply chain risk, and AI-driven anomaly detection.

An independent researcher and author, Vilas has published peer-reviewed research on SCADA security, IT/OT convergence, and Zero Trust architecture, and has authored three books on cybersecurity and energy systems. He is also a continuing judge for the Globee and Edison Awards and a featured speaker at international conferences. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
