A lawsuit against all personalized ads has reached the United States Supreme Court, and could help to define the internet as we know it moving forward.
A man specifically is suing Paramount for using the fact that he signed up for a sports website to watch college athletic videos under their company and then got ads specific to him and his interests on Facebook.
The precedent he’s using for this legal action is the Video Privacy Protection Act which made it illegal for local video rental stores to divulge the video viewing habits of their customers. No personal identifying information could be divulged by them without severe consequences.
The argument is that because he was watching videos and they divulged his information, they’re in violation. Paramount disagrees and says this dude just wants to get paid and this would undermine how advertising works on the internet so it has no ground to stand on.
