Global Codex: Hidden Stories of Books Across Cultures (文化を横断する書物の知られざる物語)

本コースは、慶應義塾大学が大英図書館およびケンブリッジ大学と共同で開発し、敦煌研究院の協力のもと制作されました。なお、現在は英語版を先行公開中です。日本語版は、2027年内にリリース予定です。
書物に残されているのは、文字や絵だけではありません。このコースでは、書物を、人の手や技、文化によって形づくられてきた「もの」― 物質的な存在 (material objects) ―として見つめ直します。日本、敦煌、ヨーロッパをはじめとする世界各地の希少な写本や版本を手がかりに、書物が文化や時代を越えてどのように伝わり、変化し、新たな形を生み出してきたのかを探ります。第一線で活躍する講師陣とともに、国や文化を超えて広がる冊子本（codex）に隠された物語を読み解いていきましょう。
What can a book tell you that isn't written on its pages?
The new book-related course, _Global Codex: Hidden Stories of Books Across Cultures_ , went live on FutureLearn on 5 October 2026. It was jointly developed by Keio University, the British Library, and the University of Cambridge, in collaboration with the Dunhuang Academy in China.
Over three weeks, you will explore how the materiality, physical features and haptic experience of manuscripts and rare books reveal connections and contrasts across cultures. You’ll examine books the way librarians, conservators, and historians do, and come away seeing books in a completely new light.
