한국은 여전히 PFAS에 대해 법적 수질기준을 마련하지 못한 상태로, 잠정 관리기준(70 ng/L)에 따라 “안전하다”는 의견을 내고 있는 중입니다. 그러나 실제 수돗물과 지하수에서는 평균 1 ng/L, 최고 30 ng/L 수준의 PFOA가 검출되고 있어, 미국 EPA가 제시한 4 ng/L 기준을 초과하는 경우도 발생하고 있습니다.
정부는 PFAS를 비롯해 미세플라스틱, 조류독소, 소독부산물을 4대 위험 요소로 지정했지만, 정작 분석법과 처리 기술은 아직 제대로 확립되지 않아 저희는 이미 ‘영원한 화학물질’을 매일 마시고 있을지도 모르겠습니다.
그럼에도 5년 단위의 전국 모니터링 사업과 감시 항목 확대, 정수처리 고도화 논의를 통해 선제적 조사와 위험 인식 측면에서는 비교적 발 빠르게 대응하고 있다는 점에서 잘 대응중이라는 생각도 듭니다.
