I thought it would be easier to install a catalytic combustor inside the chimney of a wood-burning stove, rather than in the combustion chamber, so I made one.
Thank you for watching.
Always be safe and have a fun camping.
A catalytic converter for a wood-burning stove, also known as a catalytic combustor, is a honeycomb-shaped device coated with precious metals like platinum or palladium. It ignites unburned smoke particles at a low temperature, converting them into heat, water vapor, and carbon dioxide. This results in a cleaner, more efficient burn, lasting longer with less wood. However, it requires periodic cleaning and replacement. These combustors are a key component of catalytic wood stoves, significantly increasing heat output and reducing emissions compared to non-catalytic models.
🔥How It Works
Chemical Reaction: Instead of filtering, the catalyst initiates a chemical reaction that combusts the smoke at around 500-550°F (instead of 1100°F).
Heat and Efficiency: This "secondary combustion" releases even more heat, allowing the wood to burn longer and warming your home on less fuel. Clean combustion: Converts smoke into water vapor and carbon dioxide, reducing pollutants and cleaning exhaust gases.
🔥Key Features
Honeycomb design: Ceramic or stainless steel substrates provide a large surface area for the catalyst to act.
Precious metals: Platinum and palladium initiate the reaction.
Temperature dependent: To operate effectively, the stove must be heated to operating temperature (approximately 260°C), which is reached within approximately 20 minutes of a strong fire.
🔥Maintenance and operation
Use of dry firewood: Burning wet or soft wood is not recommended as it can clog the burner.
Regular cleaning: Use a vacuum cleaner or blower to remove ash through the access hole.
Replacement: Burners wear out and should be replaced every few years (typically with a 3-6 year warranty).
