Working around horses requires constant situational awareness, especially during hoof care.

Never position your head directly above a bent leg. When a horse experiences sole discomfort or sudden tension, an involuntary flexor reflex triggers rapid upward recoil. The knee and hoof snap upward with explosive force, capable of causing serious head injuries in fractions of a second.

Always maintain a lateral stance to the side, keep your head completely clear of the limb’s vertical strike path, and ensure an open escape route. Proper body mechanics protect both handler and horse.
