Andrea Bodnar studies what sea urchins can teach us about healthy aging. As science director at the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI), she compares species that live only a few years with others that can live for more than 200. Sea urchins and humans share many of the same cellular processes, and understanding how these animals maintain their health could help researchers identify new targets for drugs to treat age-related diseases and cancer.
GMGI is a nonprofit research institute on Gloucester’s waterfront. Its co-founders include Harvard Medical School professors David Walt and Marc Vidal and former Harvard professor Greg Verdine. Harvard faculty also serve on its science advisory board, helping guide research into ocean life and what it can teach us about ourselves.
