Now AI data centers have to worry about Fast & Furious style hijackings.
Recently, there were the would-be thieves who tried to steal an Nvidia-labeled big rig that was just hauling sand and not graphics cards.
But the folks who get away with it are being much more intelligent and intense with their efforts. In just the few months since June over a hundred million dollars of data center gear has been lifted from trucks that are hauling things like RAM, copper, fibre optic lines and GPUs to the construction sites.
The methods involve things like GPS-spoofing the trailers location, potential AI-generated ID forgery to impersonate the real truck driver, and just the ole reliable physical intimidation to get the goods.
But the coordinated campaigns don’t appear to be for petty thieves who are just going to try to flip things on the black market or Facebook marketplace, but it appears the boosted products are instead making their way to other data centers in China. Because of all the exporting restrictions from the US, a heist appears to be a reliable way for them to get access to the parts they need.
