Reports from Yemen say fighters from the Iranian-backed Houthi movement have taken control of a key island in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait - a globally important maritime chokepoint at the mouth of the Red Sea.

The Houthis have mounted a military push to seize control of the strait. It's on a crucial route for Saudi oil exports - made all the more vital by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A US media report suggests President Donald Trump declined requests by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to bomb Houthi positions.
