MRI로 보는 영상의 세계 The World of Imaging Through MRI
이현민은 존재하지만 인지되지 못하는 현상들을 소리와 시각적 정보를 바탕으로 공간을 재구성하는 과정을 통해 감각의 경계를 탐구해왔다. 특히 시스템화된 사회에서 격리된 죽음이라는 주제를 중심으로, 공간적 음향 디자인·영상 설치·인터랙티브 미디어를 결합하여 관객이 단순히 작품을 감상하는 수준을 넘어 감각적으로 몰입하고 체험하는 환경을 조성하는 데 집중하고 있다.
작가는 비파괴 형식으로 살아 있는 생명체의 내부 단면을 관찰할 수 있는 MRI라는 최신 기술을, 프로메테우스가 불을 가져와 인류에게 전했듯, 지상 세계에 내려온 ‘신의 눈’으로 바라보고자 한다. MRI 촬영의 순간은 삶과 죽음의 경계에서 데이터를 얻는 과정으로 이해되며, 작가는 이를 통해 특별한 중간계적 공간을 작품 속에서 구현하고자 한다.
또한 한국기초과학지원연구원의 조지현 박사와 협업하여, MRI 시스템에서 사용되는 여러 이론과 데이터들을 사운드와 이미지로 치환함으로써, 그것이 새로운 오디오비주얼 형태로 확장될 가능성을 모색한다.
Lee Hyunmin investigates the boundaries of perception by reconstructing space through sound and visual information derived from phenomena that exist yet often go unnoticed.
Focusing particularly on the theme of death in isolation within systematized societies, he combines spatial sound design, video installation, and interactive media to create environments where audiences move beyond passive observation into immersive, sensory experience.
He interprets the MRI—a technology that enables non-destructive observation of internal cross-sections of living organisms—as a “divine eye” that has descended into the human world, much like Prometheus bringing fire to humanity.
The act of MRI imaging, in his view, becomes a process of collecting data at the threshold between life and death, which he translates into a liminal space within his works.
In collaboration with Dr. Jeehyun Cho of the Korea Basic Science Institute, Lee transforms the theories and data used in MRI systems into sound and image, opening up possibilities for their expansion into new audiovisual forms.
