Recording the past for the future

Across the Middle East and North Africa, thousands of archaeological sites face threats from development, agriculture, conflict, looting and climate change.

Discover how researchers are working with partners across the region to combine archaeology and technology to understand what is at risk – and help preserve the past for generations to come.

The Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) project, led by the University of Oxford in partnership with the Universities of Leicester and Durham uses satellite imagery, archaeological research and information gathered with heritage professionals across the region to identify and monitor archaeological sites and record them in an accessible digital database.

The project also works with local and national heritage authorities, sharing skills and building the tools and expertise needed to manage and protect archaeological heritage for the future.
