The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has developed a soft pneumatic glove that enables people with paralysis to regain their ability to grasp objects. Researchers at TUM's Chair of Cognitive Systems use electrical signals from the forearm muscles to reliably predict when a person intends to grasp something.
The soft hand exoskeleton is made largely of fabric, making it both lightweight and cost-effective. It was developed in close collaboration with a patient living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Research has shown that the glove can lead to significant improvements, particularly for patients with severe motor impairments, including stroke survivors.
While Dr. John Nassour developed the hardware—including the hand-sewn glove itself—to provide optimal assistance for intended movements, Nicolas Berberich focused on predicting grasping intentions with the highest possible accuracy.
