Seo Yu (徐愈) was the 11th-generation descendant of
Seo Shin-il, the founding ancestor of the Icheon Seo clan,
and a descendant of the renowned Goryeo figures Seo Pil and Seo Hui.

During the Second Strife of the Princes in 1400,
a decisive moment in the founding years of the Joseon dynasty,
Seo Yu sided with Yi Bang-won, the future King Taejong,
and was later recognized as an Ikdae Jwamyeong Meritorious Subject.

He eventually rose to the position of Minister of Rites
and in 1410 was enfeoffed as Prince Iseong.

But this story is not simply about a man who rose to high office.

Generations later, his descendants faced another national crisis—
the Japanese invasions of Korea in the late 16th century.

Several of his descendants became righteous-army commanders,
taking up arms and giving their lives for their country.
