How do mechanics perfectly align a manual transmission clutch?! ⚙️🚗
If you drive a stick shift, eventually the friction material on your clutch disc will wear out and start slipping! Replacing it requires unbolting the entire transmission from the engine. But when it's time to install the new parts, you can't just bolt them on randomly!
Mechanics use a specialized "clutch alignment tool" that perfectly matches the splines of the transmission input shaft. They insert this plastic or metal shaft through the center of the new clutch disc and into the pilot bearing on the flywheel. This perfectly centers the disc so that when they bolt the heavy pressure plate over it, the disc is locked in the exact dead-center position! Without this tool, the transmission will physically hit the clutch and refuse to slide into the engine block!
