At extreme distances, the atmosphere itself can become a major limitation for optical cameras. Temperature differences in the air create atmospheric turbulence that can warp, shimmer, and blur distant images, especially when the viewing path stays close to the ground. This means that simply adding more magnification does not necessarily reveal more detail, because the information reaching the lens has already been distorted along the way. Long-range imaging systems therefore use techniques such as stabilization and computational turbulence mitigation to recover as much useful detail as possible. Earth curvature also affects how far objects can be seen from low elevations, with the horizon distance increasing as the observer or target is raised. Tides and Currents That is why serious long-range observation can require elevated platforms rather than simply a stronger zoom lens.
