About the Playmaker:

Based in San Diego since 2000, Mexican-American artist Humberto Cruz creates colorful and nostalgic work through digital art, fine art, acrylic paint, spray paint, and mixed media, blending whimsical characters with themes of mental health, connection, pop culture, and his upbringing between California and Tijuana, while collaborating with names like Karol G, David Guetta, Harry Style’s Pleasing, Chanel, Apple Music, CASETiFY, and Zadig & Voltaire.


Humberto's design inspo:

"For the San Diego FC project, I wanted to combine some of the iconic characters and symbols from my work with elements that represent San Diego to me personally. Being a border city connected to Tijuana, San Diego is shaped by diversity, culture, and shared experiences, and I wanted the artwork to reflect that energy in a playful and emotional way.

The waves symbolize connection and unity, since the ocean physically connects both cities. The palm trees and sun represent the everyday landscape and bright energy of San Diego, while the surfing bunny brings a sense of freedom, creativity, and the coastal spirit of the city. I also included the skull as a reference to my Mexican roots and the cultural connection between San Diego and Tijuana.

Using the team colors helped tie everything together into a colorful, welcoming, and nostalgic piece that reflects both the spirit of the club and the community around it."
