In this year’s federal budget, treasurer Jim Chalmers backflipped on an election promise and announced the government’s plan to abolish negative gearing - the policy that allows property investors to deduct net rental loss to lower their taxable income.
The move was intended to give way to owner-occupied buyers by pushing investors out of the market. But months since the announcement, the market is seeing a different reaction, with real estate agents observing a drop in rental listings and not a significant increase in first home buyers entering the market.
