The central squirrel lies entirely supine in the lawn, paws raised and throat exposed, while the adjacent adult grooms without scanning the perimeter. When ambient temperatures rise, squirrels rely on conduction to shed heat against shaded turf, but lounging belly-up requires complete trust in the surrounding territory.
