Rebuilding an engine's cylinder head is a delicate process. The heavy steel valve springs are under massive tension, and in order to lock the valve stem into place, a mechanic must compress the spring downwards to insert two tiny metal wedges called "keepers" or "collets." Normally, this requires a specialized, expensive clamping tool.
However, this DIY mechanic invented the ultimate backyard hack! By bending a piece of construction rebar and bolting it directly to the engine block, they created a massive lever. Pushing down on the rebar effortlessly compresses the heavy spring, leaving their other hand free to carefully drop the tiny locks into place without dropping them!
