Meet the all-new BMW 3 Series!

So the question is, just how different is the all-electric i3 compared to the petrol-powered 3 Series? And if you’re in the market for one of these newly released exports, which should you go for? Let’s take a closer look…

From the outside, the two versions look almost identical. Up front, both cars have the Neue Klasse-inspired front end, which features a kidney grille design flanked on either side by thin headlights. In M350 guise, there are optional yellow DRLs as well, coupled with a sportier lower bumper. Both cars look almost identical from the side, while around the back, the M350 comes with a small bootleg spoiler, a fake diffuser, and a set of quad tailpipes - and they’re all real!

However, while the two cars may look the same, under the skin they’re totally different! The i3 was built on an all-new dedicated platform; the petrol-powered 3 Series’s chassis is based on that of the previous iteration.

The similarities also continue on the inside. Both cars have the same large infotainment screen in the centre of the dash, which comes with BMW’s latest infotainment system. There are soft-touch, high-quality materials throughout the cabin, and the M350 edition we have here comes with a sports steering wheel and sports seats. Both the i3 and 3 Series also have BMW’s all-new Panoramic Vision system, with stats stretching across the length of the windscreen. There’s also the option to add a head-up display, but given all the stats you need are in the Panoramic Vision system, you probably don’t need it.

In terms of the 3 Series, the entry-level car that we’ll see in the UK is fitted with the 320 engine - a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 211hp and 330Nm. The range-topping M350 comes with the B58 engine - a 3-litre turbocharged straight-six with an incredible 443hp and 580Nm! That’s 50hp more than the previous edition! There will also be a plug-in hybrid car in the future, and BMW has confirmed there’ll be no diesel!

As for the i3, the entry-level will feature a single motor that produces 170hp and 250Nm. There are other iterations throughout the range, with the top-line model being the i3 50 xDrive - a dual-motor, AWD edition that generates 469hp and 645Nm!

The new BMW 3 Series starts from £44,975, with the price rising to £66,785 for the M350. So is it worth it? And more importantly, would you choose the i3 over the 3 Series? Let us know in the comments!
