As someone who wears #hanbok in the States pretty often, I’ve noticed that many people aren’t sure what these outfits are called.
And honestly, that’s totally fair. Even many Koreans don’t know the names of every kind of hanbok, and I definitely can’t identify every Western traditional outfit either. So the “kimono / graduation gown” guesses are just a joke, not a callout.
But next time you see clothing like this, I hope one word comes to mind: hanbok.
Also as a bonus, here’s a quick guide to a few Korean traditional garments:

- So-chang-ui: Men’s outer robe worn over daily clothing, often for formal or semi-formal use
- Do-po: Formal men’s outer robe worn by scholars and officials over other garments
