At seventeen years old, top of her class, prom queen, and dreaming of the Ivy League — Tsion Michael walked into her guidance counselor's office and was told five words that were supposed to end her story:
"Your future is illegal."
What followed was a decade in the shadows. No college financial aid. No legal path forward. No certainty about tomorrow. Tsion was undocumented — not because her family had done anything wrong, but because her father, a multilingual CPA and strategic leader, made the courageous choice to go all in for the liberation of his people in Eritrea. That sacrifice triggered a legal consequence none of them saw coming.
In this riveting, deeply personal TEDx talk, Tsion introduces the concept of the Rented Identity — the suffocating experience of performing a restricted version of yourself that does not technically belong to you. She traces her decade-long fight from the shadows to citizenship. And she reveals the unexpected truth she found on the other side: the very season that was meant to erase her was actually forming her.
Today, Tsion is an HR executive, author, doctoral candidate, and co-founder of Arise and Shine Global — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit championing immigrants, refugees, and marginalized communities worldwide. Her mission is clear: no one should ever be told their potential has an expiration date.
There is a superpower hidden in every wound that did not destroy you.
This talk will help you find yours. Tsion Michael is a TEDx speaker, HR executive, author, and global advocate whose story begins with five words that were supposed to end it: "Your future is illegal."
A former undocumented immigrant who spent a decade in the shadows, Tsion went on to build a 20-year career in finance and human resources leadership across 40+ countries, earning an MBA from Liberty University, a Labor and Employment Law degree from Tulane University Law school, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Liberty University.
She is the founder of Inspire Every Life LLC, a consulting firm, and the host of the Inspire Every Life podcast — a personal development and leadership show focused on discovering one's purpose, alignment, and breaking free from fear and mediocrity.
Driven by her own immigration journey, Tsion co-founded Arise and Shine Global alongside her father — the same man whose courageous sacrifice for the Eritrean liberation movement set her story in motion. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to championing vulnerable populations through housing, education, resources, and advocacy.
She is the author of The Aligned Woman: Is It Well With Your Soul? and the forthcoming Inspire Every Life: A Journey to Transformation and Unleashing the Power Within.
Tsion speaks, consults, and leads from one unshakeable conviction: the world does not need the rented version of you. It needs the real one. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
