Kristoffer Ajer, club ambassador Karleigh Osborne and a group of Bees supporters came together to talk about why conversation matters — and the role football can play in making it easier to open up.
Ahead of last Saturday's game against Sunderland, which was dedicated to Talking is the Best Tactic, supporters sat on a bench brought specially from the Robert Rowan Performance Centre — the same bench players, coaches and staff use at the training ground to pause and talk. Ajer joins from the club's newest bench in Gunnersbury Park, the sixth Talking is the Best Tactic bench installed in the local community, and to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.
Talking is the Best Tactic is Brentford's part of the Premier League's Together Against Suicide initiative, working to reduce stigma, prevent suicide, and create more opportunities for meaningful conversation.
Men account for nearly three-quarters of suicides in the UK, yet too often feel unable to talk about what they're going through. Talking is the Best Tactic encourages all of us to check in with the people around us, ask simple questions, and take the time to listen.
If you need support:
In an emergency, always call 999. You can also contact NHS urgent mental health support via 111 (select option 2), or call Samaritans free, 24/7, on 116 123.
