In 1896, two boys were riding their bikes along a beach in Florida when they saw something that shouldn't exist. Half-buried in the sand was a monster. A pale, rubbery mass the size of a small house — over 20 feet long, weighing seven tons. It had a bulbous body and what looked like torn-off arms. Tentacles. The boys fled. For over a century, scientists couldn't agree on what it was. An octopus? A whale? A new species? The monster kept changing its identity every time science got a new tool. Until finally, DNA testing revealed the truth.
