America’s TWO Most Dangerous Fault Lines Are Showing Signs of Rupture

Scientists are closely monitoring the Cascadia Subduction Zone and New Madrid Seismic Zone, two of America’s most dangerous earthquake systems capable of producing devastating seismic events in very different parts of the country. Cascadia threatens the Pacific Northwest with a massive megathrust earthquake and tsunami, while the New Madrid system lies deep within the central United States, where powerful earthquakes have historically been felt across enormous distances. New geological and seismic research is helping scientists understand how stress builds along these fault systems and what warning signs could emerge before another major rupture. Unlike California’s famous San Andreas Fault, both Cascadia and New Madrid could affect regions where millions of people and critical infrastructure may be poorly prepared for an extreme earthquake. Scientists continue watching both zones for changes that could reveal where America’s next major seismic disaster begins.
