The story of a scholar-official who lived through one of the most turbulent periods of Joseon Korea.

The Story of Oeom Seo In-won is a historical novel based on the life of Seo In-won (1544–1604) of the Myeongam branch of the Icheon Seo clan.

After serving as a senior government official, he became Governor of Gangwon Province. During the Japanese invasions of Korea, he served in Danyang, Gongju, and Chuncheon, working to rebuild communities devastated by war.

As Governor of Chuncheon in 1594, he is remembered for rebuilding Chuncheon Hyanggyo, which had been destroyed during the war.

Yet his later years were marked by an official impeachment, revealing another side of his complicated life.

His younger brother, Seo Ye-won, served as magistrate of Jinju and died in battle. The two brothers faced the turmoil of their age in very different ways.

Tracing his ancestor's name through old family records, descendant and author Jaewon Seo asks:

How can a person's achievements and faults coexist in the record of history?

Based on historical sources including the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, local gazetteers, and family records, this novel reconstructs the inner lives, conversations, and circumstances of its characters through historical imagination.
