Why do mechanics inject colored fluid into engine cylinders?! 💉⚙️
When building a high-performance engine, guessing is not an option! To maximize horsepower without accidentally blowing the engine to pieces, mechanics have to know the exact "compression ratio." To figure this out, they have to measure the precise volume of empty space inside the cylinder when the piston is at the very top.
This process is called "CC'ing" the engine. The builder seals a perfectly flat piece of acrylic (plexiglass) over the engine block. They then use a syringe or a burette to inject a specific measurement of fluid—usually rubbing alcohol mixed with food coloring, or light oil—through a tiny hole until the chamber is completely full! By checking how much liquid it took to fill the gap, they can use math to calculate the exact compression ratio before ever starting the car!
