Germany is facing a political earthquake. In the state election of Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD secured nearly 44% of the vote, its strongest result ever. Leading candidate Ulrich Siegmund is now set to become the first state premier from the party. AfD leaders like Alice Weidel are calling it only a beginning, claiming they could soon be ready to govern the whole of Germany . 

At the same time, thousands have taken to the streets to protest against the surge of the far-right. Chancellor Friedrich Merz faces growing pressure after his CDU suffered major losses. He once vowed to cut AfD support in half. Instead, the party has now overtaken his conservatives nationwide.
