The best vaccine conversations aren't just about sharing information. People with vaccine concerns are shaped by underlying psychological drivers, or "attitude roots", that influence how they interpret information and misinformation. Effective conversations start with understanding these drivers, building trust, and providing the right information in the right way to support informed decision-making.

Dr Emma Anderson, Professor Stephan Lewandowsky, and Dr Ginny Gould share how JITSUVAX Training, a University of Bristol social venture, brings specialist psychological expertise to enhance health workers’ skills and confidence to address vaccine misinformation effectively.
Developed from international research led by the University of Bristol, JITSUVAX Training trains health workers with practical tools to identify and address the psychological drivers underpinning vaccine concerns using empathetic communication approaches and insights from cognitive psychology. Participants learn how to correct misinformation, avoid arguments and protect positive patient relationships, with a memorable conversation framework (the ‘Empathetic Refutational Interview’) shown to build trust and increase vaccine acceptance.
Since launching, the programme has trained hundreds of people across the healthcare sector, and the expert team is expanding training delivery across the UK and building links internationally with the World Health Organisation.
